Russian and US trained violinist, soloist, orchestra musician
My name is Olesya Slobodyan
(Ah-LEH-sya) (Slah-bah-DYAN ) Waln. I was born and raised in Ussuriysk, in the Russian Far East. At the age seven I started studying violin at the Central Music School in my hometown with one of the most influential people of my life, Galina Kopilova. After completing my Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in violin performance in Vladivostok, Russia, I had a great opportunity to study in the United States. Violin brought me to UAF and then to the Boston Conservatory to complete my studies. My teachers include Felix Kalman, Kathleen Butler-Hopkins, Madeline Schatz, Marylou Speaker-Churchill, Lynn Chang, masterclasses with Pamela Frank, James Buswell, Erez Offer, Matvey Liberman. Throughout my life I have participated in and won numerous regional concerto competitions in Russia and Alaska which led to performances with Khabarovsk Symphony Orchestra, Vladivostok Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and Fairbanks Symphony. One of my main passions in life is teaching violin for the last 20 years. In addition to teaching I play in Anchorage Symphony and Anchorage Opera Orchestras.
